Nejsem jenom tak nadarmo vnukem toho svého děda, který nemohl nikdy usnout, dokud si před spaním nepoznamenal, kolik korbelů vyzunkal a zase ze sebe vyžbluňkal. Musím si popovídat, a tady v Clamecy se v jazykových turnajích nikdy nevybiji dosyta. Musím se vymluvit, jinak mě všechno tísní jako toho barbíře krále Lávry. Mám trochu prostořeký jazyk, a kdyby mě někdo slyšel, jistě bych visel. Ale tím hůř, na mou věru! Kdyby se člověk ničeho neodvážil, zalkl by se nudou. Rád si k věčeru přežvýkám, jako ti naši velicí bílí volci, všecko, co jsem za den do sebe vsoukal. Jak je příjemné ohmatat, pohladit, pohrát si se vším, co člověk přes den myslil, viděl a nasbíral; vychutnat zobáčkem, okusit a znovu ochutnat, nechat se rozplývat na jazyku a pomalu, pomalu polykat, vypravovat si zvolna všecko, co nebylo možné v klidu smlsat, protože to člověk jen tak ve spěchu zachytil! Jak to lahodí, obcházet ten svůj malý vesmír a říkat si hrdě:
,, Je můj! Tady jsem pánem a vladařem já. Ani zimy, ani mrazů tady není. Ani krále, ani papeže, ani válek. Ani stále hromující panímámy…“
